Philosophy of Social Justice
What is social justice?
Coming to Social Justice high school, I only saw social justice as laws, rules, and inequality. I remember in Ms. Alt's eighth period class, we spent weeks talking about the history of our school and why we should be proud of it. We had to write a reflection paper about what we learned and how it made us feel. Without realizing it, I wrote a paper that was five or six pages long. Although I didn't realize it then and there, social justice became a huge part of my life.
Sophomore year is when my experience at Social Justice High School began to change dramatically. I remember the first cut to damage my faith was when Mr. Atorino announced he would leave Social Justice. He gave a teary-eyed speech about how the concept of social justice isn's about the PEOPLE who first contributed to the fight, but the fight itself. Sophomore year is when I learned there was more emotion involved with the term "social justice".
Junior year is when I questioned my faith for the fight for social justice. I still didn't have a solid definition but I realized the concept was more complicated than two English words put together. Teachers were cut from schools due to a budget cut and the people who once carried others on their backs for Social Justice High School were all graduating and leaving for bigger and better things. Emotions rising high for this teenage girl came to a fall and I lost my faith. I said social justice is a nice idea where people will come together and sing relatively gosspel songs but will enver come true. Like the American Dream I learned about it Honors American Lit., social justice is never fully achieved.
Things only got worse as I came into senior year and learned United States History. America has proven itself to be a hypocrite and place of false hope. Having oppressed people and create a social ladder where only few can climb to rise to the top mafe me lose hope. However, after learning about Paulo Freire, something was kindled inside of me. Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, my love for learning and passion for telling the truth came back. The idea of social justice is one where people learn about the injustices of thier world, whether it be political, economical, or social injustices, and take action to reform the wrongs.
Social justice is a wounded person who does not have a voice. Social justice depends on the people around her broken figure to help her speak and fight the struggle of cancerous oppression.
